After is a game about telling a shared story in both the past and the present! The main arc of the story is set in the present, with brief expository forays into the past. Players will each manage two versions of their character. In the present, they are a relatively complex and powerful character. In the past, a relatively simple yet effective adventurer whose story is just beginning!
After is setting-agnostic but does offer an optional setting, its own weird world, Extempore. After is set in the world of Extempore - a world of transient landmasses – called domains - seemingly plucked from countless fantastical worlds. The result is a maximalist landscape where almost any genre of story can be represented and likely smashed together with abandon!
These domains could house a neon-drenched noir where hackers clash with an orcish mafia, a haunted landscape populated only by orphaned shadows, or the entire state of Rhode Island circa 1978.
It follows that the population of Extempore is similarly chaotic: AIs with a penchant for necromancy, punk rock medusas, or an accountant who grew up in Rhode Island circa 1978, but now leads an orcish mafia.
This means that whatever stories the players and the narrator are looking to tell should feel at home in this weird and chaotic world!
